‘Give it another push Seán’: All smiles as Christmas tree lights go on at Leinster House

Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett did the honours with the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste in attendance along with opposition party TDs and the Seanad Cathaoirleach Paddy Burke.

THERE WAS A rare outbreak of cross-party cooperation outside Leinster House this evening as politicians gathered to turn on the lights of the Oireachtas Christmas tree.

Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett did the honours with the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste in attendance along with opposition party TDs and the Seanad Cathaoirleach Paddy Burke.

There was music and song from Blackrock College’s Lieberman Choir and, free from the rowdiness of the Dáil chamber, the Ceann Comhairle was in fine spirits, saying he hoped the exit of the Troika will “bring not only more light into our lives but also the precious gift of hope for a bright future”.

He also said he hoped for “renewed growth and prosperity for us all”. So we know what Seán’s asking Santa for this Christmas.

Later, the Taoiseach joined in with Christmas carols, sharing a joke with Caroline Winston and posing for this great picture:
