'Tory was such a lovely bubbly girl': Devastation at sudden death of teenage girl

The 17-year-old girl died in hospital yesterday morning after taking a seizure at a nightclub.

Updated 1.30pm

A 17-YEAR-old who died after having a seizure at a Donegal nightclub on Tuesday night has been described as an outgoing, bubbly and kind girl who will be terribly missed by all who knew her.

Tory Johnston, who was due to do her Leaving Certificate next year, was out with friends at a club in Letterkenny when she took a seizure and fell to the ground. She was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Local priest Father Eamonn Kelly met with the girl’s parents Sammy and Helen and younger sister Amy this morning and spoke on Highland Radio earlier of the sorrow they are feeling.

Tory was such a lovely bubbly girl that her death just brings devastation.

He said it was shocking that something so tragic happened on a night of joy and fun for the teenage girl and her friends.

“Tory had just a lovely personality, outgoing and bubbly and wanting to help and doing good and kindness and full of life,” he said.

It’s so sad that she was taken from us so fast and so suddenly.

Gardaí are due to receive the results of a post-mortem on the girl’s body today as the exact cause of her death remains unclear.

Garda Inspector Pat O’Donnell said gardaí are looking to hear from anyone who met Tory on the night she fell ill, particularly in the Voodoo nightclub. They also want to hear from anyone who may have photos of video footage that could assist the investigation.

Letterkenny Mayor and Sinn Féin councillor Gerry McMonagle told TheJournal.ie people in the area are shocked by the girl’s death.

“It’s an awful tragedy and my heart goes out to the family,” he said. “I have family myself, daughters, and I can only imagine the pain and hurt they’re going through.”

It is expected the teenager will be laid to rest on Sunday.
