Lexus has unveiled the first image of all-new ES luxury saloon

Lexus ES saloon set to take on the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series.

LEXUS WILL DEBUT its new ES model at this week’s Beijing motor show, and the Japanese company plans to turn it into a global product that it will sell around the world.

The model name already exists in North America, but Lexus hopes that the new model will give established rivals like the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series a more serious run for their money when it launches.

It will take over from the outgoing GS model and should feature a range of four and six-cylinder hybrid powertrains with automatic transmissions. Lexus will use the TNGA (Toyota New Generation Architecture) platform from parent company Toyota, which already underpins the C-HR and Prius models. That means the combustion engine in the ES will send power to the front wheels, though it will get an electric motor in the rear that makes it four-wheel drive.

As with the current crop of Lexus models, the styling might not be to everyone’s taste, but it certainly will be eye-catching. The ES draws heavily from the range-topping LS saloon, with its oversized grille and sleek headlights. Expect it to feature the usual high-standards of finish inside the cabin too.

With this segment of the market being so competitive, Lexus will face a challenge to win sales from more established models including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. However, with the company’s expertise in hybrid technology and a solid reputation for reliability, Lexus is in a strong position to earn sales from those looking for something a little different.

The Lexus ES is expected to launch in Ireland later this year.
