24-year-old man arrested over fatal stabbing in Longford town

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED a 24-year-old man in connection with a fatal stabbing in Longford Town this morning.

The man was arrested in the Longford area this afternoon and is currently being held at Longford Garda Station.

The stabbing incident happened in the area of Great Water Street in the midlands town at about 11.50am this morning.

The man who died is understood to have been aged in his early 30s. He was discovered with chest wounds and was subsequently removed to Mullingar Hospital where he was pronounced dead this afternoon.

The scene was sealed off pending a Garda forensic examination.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have been in the area at the time, or in the region of the nearby shopping centre, to contact them at Longford Garda Station on 043 3350570, on the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111, or at any Garda Station.

A media briefing concerning the incident is set to take place at Longford Garda Station tomorrow at 12.30pm.
