POLICE IN DERRY have said they are investigating a number of possible causes for the ‘loud explosion’ heard across the city this evening.
Reports of a ‘loud explosion’ sound in the Waterside area of the city centre began to surface at around 5pm, and police say they are following a number of lines of inquiry.
It is understood that one line of inquiry being pursued is that the explosion was the result of a possible attack on police.
The public has been urged to remain “extremely vigilant” and to report any unusual events to police officers at 0845 600 8000..
A number of areas have been evacuated, and are likely to remain sealed off until sometime tomorrow, in order to facilitate searches. Traffic diversions are in place.
Police said they appreciated the assistance of the local community while the investigation continues. No injuries have been reported.
