Luas crash: Eight hospitalised as tram and tourist bus collide in Smithfield

Services on the Red Line have since resumed. Gardaí have launched an investigation.

Updated 15.55pm

EIGHT PEOPLE HAVE been taken to hospital after a Luas tram and a tourist bus collided at Smithfield, close to Dublin city centre, this morning.

It happened at around 11am.

Part of the Red Line service – which runs from The Point to the south-west suburbs – was shut down in the immediate aftermath of the collision.

The line has since fully reopened.

A Garda spokesperson said that seven people had been taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment. One person has been taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

Full age details of the people injured weren’t immediately available. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The Luas driver was unharmed in the incident, a spokesperson for Transdev, which runs the tram service, said. No update has been given on the condition of the bus driver.

An updated statement from Transdev said three investigations into the incident had begun.

They are being carried out by the gardaí, Trasndev itself and the Railway Accident Investigation Unit (RAIU).

Photos from the scene showed the glass on a number of the tram’s doors had been smashed.

A Garda investigation into the cause of the collision has been launched.

A spokesperson for the force said any traffic restrictions in the area had been lifted.
