Police receive thousands of phone calls after Madeleine McCann appeal

A lot of people who were in Praia da Luz at the time of the 3-year-old’s disappearance have been in touch with police since the re-enactment of her disappearance.

POLICE IN THE UK say they have received more than 5,000 phone calls and messages from people in the wake of a re-enactment of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who is leading the investigation, appeared on BBC1′s Crimewatch programme last night, six weeks after the re-enactment of the 3-year-old’s disappearance was broadcast.

Redwood said that a lot of people who were in Praia da Luz in Portugal at the time of the disappearance in May 2007  have contacted police with information.

Police made the appeal after they established a number of significant changes to the established timeline of what happened in Portugal, leading to a new line of investigation. The appeal was targeted at the UK, Germany and Holland.

“The media appeals produced a fantastic response from the public in all three countries with a total of 3,500 calls and messages in the UK, 850 to Germany and 650 to Holland,” Redwood said.

“Lots of people have called to say they were in Praia da Luz at the time. All of this information has obviously produced a very large volume of work for the Operation Grange team [the name of the investigation] to work through,” he said.

Police in Portugal said last month that they are to reopen the investigation into the disappearance, five years after the original police investigation concluded.
