Man arrested in Aoife Phelan murder investigation

A man is his 20s is being detained in connection with the murder of 30-year-old Aoife Phelan.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED a man aged in his 20s as part of their investigation into the murder of 30-year-old Aoife Phelan.

The man is currently detained at Portlaoise Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardaí have confirmed that a body of a woman was discovered near a house on the Timahoe Road outside Portlaoise just after 11am this morning. A post mortem examination is now underway at Tullamore General Hospital.

RTÉ News reports that the remains were discovered during a dig in a field at the back of the house.

Aoife, who was was four months pregnant, was last seen on Thursday 25 October on Colliers Lane at about 8.10pm. An alarm was raised after she failed to turn up to work in The Hermitage on Friday morning.

A 24-year-old man, who was arrested by Gardaí on Monday, was released without charge overnight after being questioned at Portlaoise Garda Station.
