Man arrested in connection with Joanna Yeates murder

A 65-year-old has been arrested in connection with the murder of Bristol landscape architect Joanna Yeates.

A MAN HAS been arrested in connection with the murder of Bristol architect Joanna Yeates.

British police said that the 65-year-old man was arrested at 7am this morning, at an address in Canynge Road in the Clifton area of Bristol, where 25-year-old Yeats had lived, reports the BBC.

Sky News has identified the man as Yeate’s landlord Chris Jefferies. AFP reports that a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed a man had been arrested but would not confirm his identity.

A statement on their website says:

Just after 0700 GMT this morning, police attended an address in Canynge Road and arrested a 65-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He has been taken into custody at a police station within the Avon and Somerset force area and detained for questioning.

Joanna Yeates’ body was discovered by a couple walking their dogs on Christmas day, eight days after she disappeared. She had been strangled.

Police are continuing to appeal for information that can help with the enquiry.

Police have been tracing Yeates’ last movements in an attempt to uncovered what happened to her. On the night she went missing, she had been socialising with colleagues in the Ram pub, on Park Street, and had left at about 8pm. CCTV footage shows her visiting several shops, including Tesco Express near her flat, where she bought a pizza. The receipt for this was found at her flat – along with her handbag, mobile phone, and coat – but there was no trace of the pizza or its wrapper.

Chris Jefferies, 65, told police that he saw three people leaving her flat at about 9pm, shortly after it is believed she returned home.

Forensic detectives have said that there was no evidence of forced entry or a struggle at Yeates’ home.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that forensic experts have removed cars from Yeates’ home this morning.
