Alexander Pacteau, 21, charged with the murder of Karen Buckley

The 21-year-old made no plea when he appeared before Glasgow Sheriff Court.

A 21-YEAR-OLD man has been charged over the death of Irish student Karen Buckley in Glasgow.

Alexander Pacteau, aged 21, appeared in court in Glasgow charged with Karen Buckley’s murder.

The Crown Office said in a statement:

Alexander Pacteau, 21, from Glasgow, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court today charged with the murder of Karen Buckley, and with attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.
It is anticipated he will appear again next week for a further hearing.

It added that it “would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage in proceedings”.

The body of the missing student was discovered on a rural farm in north Glasgow.

Pacteau was formally arrested yesterday morning after being detained by police on Wednesday night.

He appeared at a private hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court today.

Private hearings are not unusual in the jurisdiction. The media, family members and members of the public will not be allowed to attend.

The courts service only allows for the accused to be present – along with solicitors and lawyers involved in the case.

The hearings are used to decide whether a person will get bail or be remanded in custody, and are very common for dealing with serious cases.
