Gardaí wait to question hospitalised man over Bailieborough death

The 56-year-old man was arrested early yesterday morning following a nine-hour stand-off. He is being held in connection with the death of mother-of-four Patricia Kierans on Thursday evening.

GARDAÍ ARE WAITING to continue questioning a man arrested in connection with the death of a mother-of-four in Bailiborough, Co Cavan on Thursday night.

The 56-year-old man is receiving medical attention in Cavan General Hospital after taking ill yesterday.

He is being held for questioning over the death of Patricia Kierans.

The 54-year-old mother-of-four was found dead at a house in Drumbannon, Bailieboro, Co Cavan on Thursday evening after her sister rang gardaí expressing concern that she could not contact her sister.

Later that evening a man barricaded himself in the basement of The Square Bar in the town after threatening gardaí with a shotgun.

A tense stand off ensued before the man was arrested early on Friday morning.

The amount of time he can be held under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act – seven days – has been suspended while he is in hospital.

Gardaí based at Bailieborough have launched an investigation into the incident and want people who may have witnessed anything suspicious in Drumbannon between 9am and 7pm yesterday to contact them.

They are also appealing for anyone patrons who may have been in The Square Bar between 4pm and 7pm to contact them at Bailieborough on 042 969 4570 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
