Gardaí have launched a murder investigation into the shooting dead of a man in Ballyfermot in Dublin early this morning.

The man in his late 30s was shot several times as he sat in a van outside a house on Cherry Orchard Avenue just before 7am today.

Gardaí are examining a burnt-out car which was found on Inagh Road in Ballyfermot shortly after the shooting.

The car, which had been stolen five days ago, is a dark blue Opel Astra with the registration plate 99 CE 3047.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information in relation to the car’s movements before the shooting this morning to contact them.

They are also appealing to anyone passing through the area who may have seen anything suspicious to get in contact with them. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballyfermot Garda station on 6667200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
