A MAN STABBED in the chest on board a merchant vessel off the coast of Donegal has been airlifted to hospital.
The Coast Guard at Malin Head were tasked to the incident in the middle of the night at around 3.30am yesterday morning.
A long range medevac was conducted by Sligo R118 from the merchant vessel called the ‘Afric Star’ which was en route to the North West coast. The Coast Guard stated that the Air Corps Lear jet provided top cover during the incident.
Chest wounds
The man had suffered chest wounds and was airlifted to Sligo General Hospital, but was later moved to Galway Regional Hospital where his condition is described as critical.
The vessel is currently alongside the port in Killybegs in Donegal.
Gardaí confirmed that they are investigating an assault on a ship upon high seas. Gardaí remain at the scene at Killbegs and their investigation is ongoing.
It is believed that as the incident occurred in international waters, there is some uncertainty about the jurisdiction of investigation.
The nationality of the man is not yet known.
