'There are no words': McAreavey and Harte families respond to 'not guilty' verdict

Michaela’s families said there are no words which can describe the sense of devastation and desolation they both feel.

THE MCAREAVEY AND Harte families have said there are no words to describe the devastation and desolation they are feeling following the ‘not guilty’ verdict handed back by a jury at a Mauritius court earlier today.

After an almost eight-week-long trial, Avinash Treebhoowoon and Sandip Moonea, were acquitted of all charges relating to the killing of the 27-year-old Irish teacher. The decision was unanimous and arrived at by the nine members of the jury after just over two hours of deliberation.

Both families noted that they had endured seven “harrowing weeks” of the trial after already waiting 18 months for justice for Michaela who was strangled while on her honeymoon in January 2011.

Here is the joint statement, in full, made by the McAreavey and Harte families:

After waiting eighteen months in search of justice for Michaela and following the endurance of seven harrowing weeks of this trial, there are no words, which can describe the sense of devastation and desolation now felt by both families.

The families do not intend making any further comment until they return home to Ireland.
