Mercedes-Benz gives a look at its all-electric car of the future

The automaker shows how electric cars can soon move into the fast lane.

THE GENERATION EQ Concept, revealed at the Paris Motor Show, is a glimpse of how the future of Mercedes-Benz’s electric sub-brand will look.

Shown as a sporty SUV coupe, the Generation EQ is built on an entirely new platform that the German car maker will use to build its future range of all-electric vehicles.

Comparable in size to the company’s current GLC, the Generation EQ comprises an electric motor on each axle and a scalable battery design that Mercedes-Benz claims could deliver a driving range of up to 500 kilometres.

The system is designed in such a way that it could easily underpin a range of different vehicles from saloons to SUVs and even cabriolets.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, commented:

The mobility of the future at Mercedes-Benz will stand on four pillars: Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Electric. ‘Generation EQ’ is the logical fusion of all four pillars.
The emission-free automobile is the future. And our new EQ brand goes far beyond electric vehicles. EQ stands for a comprehensive electric ecosystem of services, technologies and innovations.

It is likely that the future range of EQ models will have their own unique styling and will most likely carry a front grille similar to that seen on this concept. The cars will also carry a unique light signature in the headlight design to further differentiate it from more conventional Mercedes-Benz models.

As well as a longer driving range, Mercedes-Benz is claiming that the power output of the battery packs could equate to over 400hp. Even more impressive are the claims that with a fast charge system a driving range of 100 kilometres could be recharged in five minutes.
