The Mercedes S-Class Coupe has gone to the dark side

New ‘Night Edition’ to debut at next month’s Detroit Motor Show.

THE SEEMINGLY never-ending rollout of new models from Mercedes-Benz is showing no sign of slowing down.

Mercedes plans to kick off 2017 at the Detroit Motor Show with the debut of a variant of its S-Class Coupé called the Night Edition.

As you might have guessed, the luxurious grand tourer is getting a darker, meaner styling treatment. It gets a distinctive single-louvre radiator grille finished in gloss black, and rides on similarly coloured 20-inch AMG multi-spoke lightweight alloy wheels.

Both the front and rear bumpers get the AMG styling treatment, making the car look that bit more aggressive. Adding to the look, both the door mirror housings and side sill inserts will also be painted black. The main body is painted in Selenite Grey Magno paint as standard.

Inside the luxurious cabin is lined with what seems like acres of leather, though you can, of course, choose to have Napa leather or even AMG Napa leather, in a variety of different colour combinations. (All of which are dark.) High-gloss black poplar wood trim also comes as standard.

Only the S 500 Coupé will be offered in the Night Edition. This is powered by a 4.6-litre V8 petrol engine that produces 455hp and an impressive 700Nm of torque. That’s enough to propel the luxury coupé to 100km/h from rest in just 4.6 seconds.

The Night Edition is due to arrive in time for spring, and will sit alongside the rest of the S-Class Coupé and Cabriolet range, as well as the AMG-powered versions.

Prices are still to be confirmed. But as the saying goes, if you have to ask the price…
