Mexico: Mayor-elect shot dead

Edgar Morales Perez was elected as mayor-elect of the city of Matehuala on 1 July.

THE MAYOR-ELECT of the city of Matehuala in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, has been shot dead along with his campaign manager.

Edgar Morales Perez, who was elected on 1 July, was killed along with Francisco Hernandez as they drove home from a party. Another person survived the attack, reports the BBC.

Perez was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which condemned the murder and urged the authorities to seek out the perpetrators.

The motive for the attack is not known and the lone survivor has said she cannot identify the attackers.
