MG has unveiled a very slinky all-electric concept car

The eclectic MG E-Motion concept was uncovered at last month’s Shanghai motor show.

MG HAS UNVEILED an all-new electric supercar concept at the Shanghai International Automotive Show.

Called the MG E-Motion, the car is said to offer a “glimpse of the future” and will push the boundaries of innovation and technology.

The iconic British Morris Garage (MG) brand can trace its roots back to 1924 – but is now a subsidiary of SAIC Motor UK, owned by the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor.

MG produces just two cars for Europe, the affordable GS SUV and MG3 supermini, which is why this car seems to have come out of nowhere.

The 2+2 GT has a sleek sportsback-style design with a classic-looking long bonnet with large starlight matrix front grill with LED headlights. If you look closely at the photos you can see a body-coloured cover over the top of the headlights that slides open to reveal MG’s trademark round headlamps from its classic sports cars – a nice touch.

The rear features vertical tail lights, a retractable spoiler, carbon fibre diffuser and a glass canopy extends the full length of the car. There are some strong lines along the side of those futuristic show-stopping butterfly doors.

Whilst there are no official photos of the interior yet, sketches show a luxurious looking cabin with plush quilted leather seats and door trims with digital panels on the doors to operate the windows and door mirrors – buttons are so passé.

We don’t have many details on the mechanicals yet, but we do know that the E-Motion is based on SAIC’s new electric modular architecture and the hypothetical figures are a claimed 0-100km/h time of less than four seconds and a single-charge range of more than 500km.

Hopefully, this car signals MG’s return to the sports car market and rumor has it that a production version of the car could launch in 2020 with prices starting at £30,000. An all-electric sports car that costs that little with supercar pace and cool butterfly doors? Shut up and take my money!
