“EVERY CHILD IS an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

President Michael D Higgins quoted Pablo Picasso as he attended the awards ceremony of the 60th Texaco Children’s Art Competition in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham today.

President Higgins viewed the prize-winning entries and spoke to the 127 young artists present.

There were seven competition age categories and all of the students who won the first, second and third prizes were there to collect their awards.

The guest of honour was then presented with a portrait of poet Seamus Heaney painted by 16-year-old David Monaghan from Gorey Community School.

Entitled ‘Counting Classes to a Close’ the title drawn from a line the Seamus Heaney poem Mid-Term Break.

The overall competition was won by Shania McDonagh from Claremorris whose remarkably lifelike pencil drawing ‘Coleman’ won international acclaim.
