Microsoft built a Surface Pro 3 tablet out of cardboard, and it kinda works

The company created the replica tablet computers as part of a promotion happening in Australia.

MICROSOFT HAS DECIDED to promote its latest tablet, the Surface Pro 3, by building a cardboard replica of it.

The company has been sending these cardboard tablets to a number of schools in Australia as part of a marketing campaign to get more classrooms using it, and mark its launch in 25 new countries tomorrow, according to The Verge.

The tablet is very limited in comparison to its real counterpart. An low-res MP4 player is placed inside the cardboard and powers a small part of the screen. It also comes with a mini USB port, which is mainly used to recharge the MP4 player.

The rest of the ‘screen’ is mainly cardboard, with clickable buttons to bring up different videos of the Surface 3.

Google, at its developer event back in June, gave out cardboard VR headsets to those attending. It required wearers to place an Android phone inside it and upload apps through the Chrome browser.
