A giant inflatable Minion flew loose and caused traffic havoc in Santry
No, really.

MOTORISTS IN THE Santry area of north Dublin got a shock this afternoon, as a giant inflatable Minion flew loose of its restraints and tumbled onto the Old Swords Road.
Gardaí had to be called, and the air was let out of the inflatable.
According to a witness, one driver had the wing-mirror knocked off his car. But otherwise there were no injuries.
Here’s how the Minion looked yesterday, as it was being inflated…
Whoops!
We couldn't find this Tweet
And here’s how the incident unfolded today, at around 3pm…

"I'm not sure how it got loose but I just saw it coming loose and flying across the road as we were driving," Erin Van Londen, from Portmarnock, said.
"It's been very windy in the area."
A motorist's wing mirror was damaged by the escaped inflatable, and the incident caused traffic problems for some time before it was deflated and taken away.
"I actually rang the gardaí. It was quite an odd thing to have to report," Erin said.
They came and sorted it all out. They deflated it on the road and then they ended up having to get a wheelbarrow to get it out of the way.
The Minion, before it was deflated was between "30 and 40 feet" high, she said.
"We got quite a shock. Luckily it didn't seem to cause much damage."
Could it have had more serious consequences?
However, a local councillor warned that the escaped Minion could have had serious consequences.
In a statement this evening, Cllr Paul McCauliffe said he has referred the incident to Dublin City Council's planning enforcement department to investigate if the inflatable Minion was the subject of any planning regulation.
He also wants to find out if the correct health and safety measures were in place.
"Fairground events and festivals are really important in bringing footfall to our city villages but even the smallest events have health and safety conditions," he said.
"I have asked the Council to provide me with a report on the incident and for the operators of the fairground to be interviewed by council officials."

Politics aside, it must have been hard for a man of pats age who carried this burden for years ( by burden I mean wanting to come out) to come out. Imagine hiding this from a staunch catholic ireland for so long. Fair play to you Pat. Hope others feel that they too are not too old to let themselves be free.
Well done Pat.. Not having the courage to come out and be yourself is a heavy burden to carry for all these years. It must be hard to just blurt it out though.. It shouldnt be that way..
I suppose it begs the question how can we make it easier for gay people to just say the words “i’m gay by the way”
Surprised by that comment Sinead you normally side with the Jesus junkies and they’re the very people who condemn Gay people to live in the shadows especially from that man’s generation.
I would hope we are coming close to an Ireland where a persons sexuality has no bearing on how they are perceived. Pat Carey’s sexuality was never and will never be any of my business. What is my business however is what a public representative does while in office, his last days in office was majorly damaging to the country,
Fair play to Pat. Shows guts to talk come out like that and talk so candidly, doesn’t matter who you are. I met him a few times but can’t claim to know him. He always came across to me as a very decent guy; seems even more so now.
Good on you Pat. I’m the same generation. There were no gay people. Only Queers , Benders, Shirtlifters, Arsebandits etc and remember it was illegal. Why would anyone come out!!
Well said Ronan
The man’s sexuality is irrelevant it’s what he and the rest of his Fianna Fail party did to screw up this country that should not be forgotten an apology to the Irish people might be a start.
Why should he be in jail? What crime did he commit? Try actually coming up with an actual crime rather than the usual ‘he screwed the country over’ tripe
Isn’t it such a sad reflection on us as a society that anyone should have to discuss, let alone reveal their sexual preferences.
Why the hell should there even be a closet?
This closet is not the creation of people who, for years, are forced to inhabit it, but rather the pestilential creation of an inhuman and intolerant society…us.
As homophobia gradually diminishes, the need for people who are gay to conceal their sexual orientation diminishes.
Of course, homophobia still exists. This is shown by the number of persons who are compelled to write negative comments about people who happen to be gay for the reason that they are gay.
David, here’s an idea -instead of moaning endlessly on any story connected to LGTB rights -perhaps you should scroll past them and avoid being so bored by something that you clearly have no interest in. Unless you are being a nasty mean minded troll on purpose?
In which case, I would recommend you get a life (off the internet.)
Don’t be so stupid, its the opinion section, why do you want people to only spout your opinions ?
Only a troll could come up with such rubbish ideas as yours.
Gerard from your Twitter feed you are the very definition of a troll. Especially where you refer to “Ailbhe and her trolls” being full of it. Pot, kettle, black you foolish troll.
Anthony Lang
Keep chuckling, I’v never had problems with gay people, I do believe many gay people have problems with their sexuality, most of them that I know get on with their lives like the rest of the world, they are aware the magic placebo, is in fact only a placebo.
If you can learn to respect the differences in life you won’t be pushing for a mono culture.
I’m all for people not being pressurised into coming out. It should be their decision alone but it’s very sad when someone has felt they couldn’t come out publicly for so many years. That’s never a good situation. Here’s hoping he feels he can be his true self both publicly and In his private life.
This man messed up this country as part of a #ff/green government and that’s all history will remember him for . Lacks courage in all areas by the sound of it
Hopefully the time will come that people of an age where they can be in government will already have dealt with the issue and it’ll either be commonly known or a privacy matter rather than a hiding in shame thing.
Larissa
How about a course in reality, I have seen mistakes in your post, I did not realise you had problems with understanding the concepts conveyed in sentences, my heart bleeds for you but, I don’t have time to join you in your pedantic charade.
I find this interview incredibly moving, particularly the line about mothers.
I do indeed feel it adds another dimension to the debate, especially for people in Pat’s age group. It takes far more courage to talk about your sexual identity when you grew up in a generation that did not talk about sex at all. He has spoken out for the silent, older gay population. People that most of our parents worked with or were in social groups with, but no questions were ever asked or answered about their private life.
Well done to him, thankfully going into the future people will be honest from an early age and will be able to live honest and fulfilled lives with family and their partners. Not hiding away worrying about been judged.
This is an ex minister who pushed through the civil partnership Bill while hiding his sexuality.
This is a perfect example of the gay agenda.
I will not commenting any further on gay articles on the journal.
The journal had one goal and it’s plain to see.
So much for reporting without fear or favour
Gary Gary I’m not one for name calling but you are a tw@& crawl back into the cage that the iona institute let you out of. If this man had an agenda the referendum we are facing would have happened a long time ago. Have some respect for the steps this man has taken in support of the referendum. I don’t agree with his politics of the past but I respect his actions and support of an equal Ireland! I know when the referendum passes and it will, narrow minded little people like you will be sickened to the core and that makes me very happy! Good day!
There we go again, the lbgt militia go straight into insults when a comment doesn’t glorify gay propoganda, name calling straight away…… Straightaphopic
Well said Gary. The PC liberal and homosexual mob on here are just fascist bully boys and intolerant of any rational debate on the Referendum. I’ll be voting NO. Toodooloo.
One point of like to make when when the gay The gay referendum is not passed the gay lobby will have nobody else to blame but themselves.
They attack and abuse anybody who disagrees with them.
It’s fair enough to have a different opinion, a lot of people are against same sex marriage but your comment was out of line in my opinion, to be perfectly honest. There is starting a civilized debate and then there is what you did XD
The gay lobby? Is that a hotel with pink wallpaper in the reception?
Seriously though, gay marriage is a threat to the family, I mean the ‘gays’ going to go to each individual family’s just to undermine hetero couples marriages. Isn’t that what they mean by that? Because if it isn’t then I don’t see their problem.
Courageous move by Pat all the same. I wish him well…
Gary Gary you have said that you won’t comment any more on “gay agenda” items. I would ask that you don’t do this. Yes some people on the yes side can be pig headed but I hope you would agree that some people on the no side are equally pig headed.
Can I ask as a gay man what is so bad about me. Why should I be treated a second class citizen in my own country. What is so different about my love for my partner of 11 years that means I cannot marry him. I would really like to know so that I can counter your arguments in a civilized manner.
Eoin Muldoon
No, I spelled it as I wanted to, have to be fair to fools and give them the chance to be pedantic, it makes their day, I don’t want to be a killjoy.
Follow the money, they are using LGBT as the agents of change to privatise education, we need independent observers at the vote counting, there is a clear conflict of interests here, the government is unashamedly biased in its support of one minority party, we don’t need another Niece or Lisbon.
Let us make sure the count is fair. http://www.byebyedemocracy.org/2013/04/social-media-influence-sock-puppets-and.html
Anthony Lang
Its wonderful to see how open you are about displaying your foolishness, I can’t help but notice you are very engaged in this topic yourself ? You want it all your way.
Why do you want it to be your private preserve ? You are very paranoid about others comments.
Coming out for political gain is deceitful.
Pat has stated he came out to help with the referendum.
Plenty of honest gay people have come out for all the right reasons.
Ailbhe relax I’ll only say this once but there is serious serious lobbying by the journal on the gay agenda which is okay in moderation but to try and deliberately influence when your a news stream is similar to indo and the 3rd reich agenda in the dail
If you don’t give balance you loose credibility with the moderate audience
And giving bigots a platform to spread hate is better? Balance is not ok when you have to include someone with disgusting views, if people cannot be kind to one another then they should not be given a platform to speak because they are doing so much more damage than people who are accepting of others, being accepting of others does not cause people to hate themselves, or even kill themselves however giving people hateful people a platform to spread hate does that.
I’m sick of being told Enda Kenny is married to a woman. Like, talk about shoving the heterosexual agenda down my throat? And apparently our president is also straight? That heterosexual lobby, at it again.
No, I’m sorry, but I have to say it. I don’t find this “incredibly moving”. I accept without question Mr. Carey’s confession that he did not have the courage in the past to come out in any form, as is his right. However, I am in my sixties, have gay friends also in their sixties, and these guys did not necessarily advertise their sexuality but were upfront with anyone who wanted to know. As for the lack of acceptance this sometimes caused – they had the guts to say “eff em if they can’t take a joke”. By the way, I am not in any way downplaying the effect that being an openly homosexual person can have on employment prospects. I bear no animosity against Mr. Carey, but it is pretty easy to make these important disclosures when he has retired from politics, has secured his numerous pensions etc., etc., Mr. Carey might brush aside the fact that he was part of a Government, and no doubt an enthusiastic part of a Government, who blocked and defeated socially progressive legislation which would have helped minorities in this country, not to mention those who are not a minority i.e., women, but not everbody is fooled. It appears to be fashionable now to come out as gay (viz a couple of politicians I can think of who jumped rather than be outed, )but I see no particular merit in Mr. Carey’s disclosures.
Yep. At best I feel a little bad for the man, being rolled back out into the public eye now the party’s seen that everyone loves gay ministers. But it doesn’t earn him any respect.
Coming out as a gay man I can and do applaud. well done Pat Carey.
Being an out FF minister is another matter, no matter how affable and personable he may be.
Good luck to the man and hope his personal life goes well. However, I didn’t ask to hear about his personal life. As an elected representative, he acted terribly on issues such as those Ronan mentioned earlier. If he’s Gay or straight it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t excuse that behaviour he carried out as a corrupt minister.
Ok he’s gay no big deal to be open anymore. At least he can be himself now, but he was part of that gang that fecked the hole country &shouldn’t be forgiven or forgotten for that.no pun intended.
b willy
” An individuals’ sexuality is a private and intimate matter … for them and them alone. ”
How can it be a private matter when he publicises it ? And to openly promote a political agenda.
Like anyone that was in government, still treating the people like fools.
@ Gareth Mahoney
First off I hope you and your partner are very happy and I think you should have equal rights in the eyes of the law.
I just don’t think the definition of marriage should be changed.
Also I think the name Calling aggressive liberals are counter productive to the case of gay rights.
These people bully and name call to achieve their agenda .
They are using the gay issue to bash the Catholic church.
All the best my friend
@ Gary Gary. You want me to have equal rights but not an equal right to marriage. Is my love any different. Again am I a bad man because I’m gay. I cannot and refuse to be half equal. I am not asking for the right to marry my sister dog uncle and this referendum is not about that however much the Iona institute try to bend it. ( pun intended) I want to marry the man I call my husband for the last 15 months and have the legal recognition that he is my husband and not my civil partner. It won’t damage any other form of marriage and in my opinion can only strengthen it.
Your right about the aggressive people but I think it works both ways. The Iona institute is doing a great job for the No side.
As for the church. If you were called intrinsically evil I would think that you would want to bash the church as well. As for me I find the church irrelevant now which is a shame as they could do some good in the world if they kept to their competencies.
But you are not the same as a natural couple
It doesn’t make you less equal
But you cannot procreate naturally
You are not made to go together biologically.
John Ferry, what is a “natural couple” ? It sounds like an oxymoron. A couple is a couple. Attaching “natural” to it is meaningless. If a couple are attracted to each other then that is natural. Being gay or being heterosexual is equally natural and I think that this is what you have a problem with. By your definition being gay is therefore “unnatural”. This is self evidently untrue. And if you deem a gay couple “unnatural” as compared to a hetereosexual couple then of course you are saying they are less equal. Procreation has nothing to do with being “natural” By this definition childless married people are “unnatural”. This is where the use of such language leads: to absurd reductionism where the human person is lost sight of.
So is LGBT, all the same gang, if you can make most parents refuse to send their children to school, you can privatise education and make them pay, like the water and hospitals, privatisation is the real agenda, follow the money.
The government is laughing at the public, it can fund and use any minority group to rob the people, why are they not supporting and pushing anything that would help the people ?
Another Niece and Lisbon coming up, there is money in your pocket, they want it.
Creation, God, Nature …. Being gay isn’t a decision, its his people are born, there is no changing it. So you are wrong it is completely Natural. When did you decide you were heterosexual? Why did you choose to be heterosexual? If you haven’t been with someone of the same sex how do you know your not gay? ……. Might seems stupid questions to ask a straight person but that’s the very questions put to gay people over the years!!!!! You don’t decide you just are the way you are made!!!!
The definition of marriage over time from a US article I came across –
“The biblical King Solomon [] was a dedicated polygamist, with 700 wives. Monogamy has always been the norm in Christianity, but not as part of a marriage of equals.
The 18th-century English jurist William Blackstone explained, “By marriage, the husband and wife are one person in the law; that is, the very being or legal existence of a woman is suspended, or at least incorporated or consolidated into that of the husband, under whose wing, protection, or cover she performs everything.”
Women generally couldn’t enter into contracts without permission from their husbands. In legal status, they were a notch above sheep and goats. In America, it was not until well into the 19th century that states began to grant married women something resembling full property rights.
Even then, marriage had attributes that traditionalists would like to forget. Husbands who forced themselves on their wives were not guilty of rape, since they were legally entitled to sexual access. Contraception was forbidden in many states. Only in 1965 did the Supreme Court decide that such laws “violate the right of marital privacy.”
The ideal of marriage enshrined in the 1950s reflects a myopic nostalgia for a phase that didn’t last.”
Want to support the historical definition of Marriage still?
So What Pat.. that doesn’t take away the fact you were part of a corrupt political party … can you be more open about the goings on in Fianna Fail as well please. . Thank you..
Why is the Irish media, today, giving so much attention to a has-been (Pat Carey)?
Mr Carey is long retired, and even when he was a government minister he held only relatively minor portfolios (he never held any of the three or four major portfolios within the Irish cabinet). If Mr Carey, on another day, was speaking out on virtually any other issue, he would be lucky to be given a couple of lines in the ‘briefs’ news section on page 17 of a newspaper. Because the Irish media today are obsessed with homosexuality, and of changing the authentic and basic meaning of marriage as that between a man and a woman regardless of how this will effect the upbringing of children and the structure of families in the future, all of a sudden Pat Carey becomes an important person whom the nation all know and love.
Can Irish people not even begin to see the deliberate nature of the bias and agenda here on the part of the Irish media? Do we have any power of discernment left?
John B Reid, his story is highly relevant. It is relevant because he comes from a generation of people in Irish life and in his case, in public life, who could not be open about who they were because of fear and shame. His story is the story of many thousands of our fellow citizens from that era, of his age and older, who were essentially forced to live a lie. His statement about his own fear and his own lack of courage is commendable not only because of its sheer personal honesty (and courage despite what he says) but because his experience is the story of some many others. This is another breach in the dam of lies and denial that has characterised core aspects our society. It is a good day and he should be commended.
Anthony Lang
As you already know, it is impossible to engage ” open mindedly ” with LGBT, they have their campaign to promote, discussion and debate are not part of it.
I think it’s actually a reference to the gay teacher who won a wedding competition this week but felt she had to pixelate her face because of possible consequences in work
Politically I never thought much of Carey but fair play to him on this one. As others have said it must be incredibly difficult for people of that generation to express being gay in public.
I agree Sean de Paore, homosexuality only became legal in Ireland in 1993, he would have been 44 or 45 at that time, before that – a lifetime of denial and made to hide your sexuality.
I’m in my fifties and remember only too well the stigma and social outcasting (including some of their family members I might add) that my gay friends would have faced had their sexuality been made public knowledge, so it had to remain hidden, shameful times.
Yeah never forgive or forget what they did. Gerry Adams though, a man of honour in the face of paediphilia in his own family. Give me a sell out anyday
Yes, that will take five quangos and a few Billion €’s Says the State (of corruption), Dennis O’B will supply the equipment, that will cost another few Billion, thanks for the suggestion.
Big w@llie your name can’t allow people to reply to you because of journal censor ship.how silly can one be.even your name isn’t allowed a reply and no picture as well you really are hiding behind a wall.
The government is starting to look desperate to push this issue, fair play to the man, but how is it that the government won’t push anything that is meaningful for most people.
Joe Thurly
Correct, I should have said ” the state “, but it makes no difference, he was in government and displayed the same disdain for the electorate.
I think that we can all agree on one thing, this is an emotive issue. Being gay is not a new thing. It has been part of us, regardless as to whether we accept this or not, from as far back as history recorded. I’d like to come out for the first time on social media and unashamedly say that I am a straight man who loves women. Pat and Leo are straight men who unashamedly love men. I don’t see an aberration here or a difference between us. Why do we develop such an intolerance of ourselves? I’ve seen, firsthand, the result of this intolerance and the devastating effect it has had on family members. People have been forced to flee this country as a result of homophobia. Fact! We’ve had economic migration in recent years but we forget that we’ve also had enforced sexual migration. We must get to a place where people need not have to label themselves as being straight or gay because it should not matter. Be proud of your sexuality, but let it not decide your fate.
All the political parties and government seem desperate to push this agenda, why is it so against pushing anything that can help most people, they more often than not put this same energy into defying the people.
Good for Pat to state his sexuality, but, why now, it in no way excuses Irish politicians disdain of and disregard for the people of this country
Gay is now a word of equal respect on the internet just like other orientations, there are gay dating and chat sites like http://www.meetoutside.com that are helping improve the scenario by providing equal free service to the gay members.
