Murder investigation opened after death of man (73) attacked in his bed

Two people were arrested in September in relation to the attack.

A MURDER INVESTIGATION has been opened after a man in his 70s died following an attack at his home in Co Armagh.

Detectives began the murder investigation following the death of 73 year old Eugene Carr, who died in the Royal Victoria hospital shortly before 8pm last night.

Senior Investigating Officer Chief Inspector Lee McNevison said:

This elderly and vulnerable man was victim to a horrendous attack whilst he was in his bed at his home in Clogharevan Park in Bessbrook during the early hours of Monday 31 August.
A post mortem will be carried out in due course, however we believe at this stage that he died from the injuries he received following the violent aggravated burglary.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Commander, Superintendent Simon Walls said the force wanted to extend its sympathy to the Carr family and thank the wider community for their support during our investigation to date.

A 25-year-old female and 26-year-old male arrested in the Newry area on 4 September in relation to this attack were later released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

“Enquiries are very much ongoing and we are asking witnesses or anyone who believes they can assist in the investigation in any way to contact detectives at Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101,” said Superintendent Walls.

Information can be given anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
