Man arrested following death of Westmeath woman has detention extended

GARDAÍ HAVE EXTENDED the detention period of a man arrested in connection with the murder of Brigid Maguire last weekend.

The 53-year-old man was taken into custody yesterday evening in Mullingar.

He would ordinarily have been released at the latest 12 hours after his arrest, but he will now be held until at least tomorrow afternoon.

Brigid’s body was found at a house in the village of Ballynacargy some time around 9.30pm on Saturday night.

She is believed to have had a son and daughter.

Gardaí began a murder investigation yesterday following the results of a post-mortem examination.

The suspect is currently being detained at Mullingar Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Gardaí asked anyone with information to contact the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800 666 111, Mullingar Garda Station on 044-9384000 or any other station.
