Teenage girl dies after being knocked down in Mayo

AN 18-YEAR-OLD woman who was knocked down in Mayo yesterday evening has died.

The teenager was walking on the N60 Castlebar to Claremorris Road at about 5pm when she was hit by a car.

She was taken to Mayo General Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11.30pm.

The  driver of the vehicle, an 83-year-old woman, and her young male passenger, were both hospitalised as a precaution, but are not understood to have been injured.

The road at Carrownurlaur in Breaffy was closed off for a period but has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact Castlebar Garda station on 094-903-8200, call the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or contact any Garda station.
