National Library evacuated after basement fire

But all is ok now and no collections were damaged.

THE NATIONAL LIBRARY of Ireland was evacuated today after a fire broke out in the basement.

The small fire broke out just before midday during routine maintenance works.

Luckily, there were no injuries and no collections were damaged. A statement from the library said that traffic disruption that occurred because of Kildare Street being sealed off has no dissipated.

“The fire was immediately brought under control but the fire alarm system in the Library was activated and buildings were evacuated, as is the rule in the Library. The Dublin fire service attended the scene. Kildare Street was sealed off and has since reopened.

“There were no injuries. No collections were damaged or were in danger of being damaged.”
