Hyundai has unveiled the new third-generation i30

The new i30 will be the first Hyundai worldwide to feature the 1.4 T-GDI with 140hp.

HYUNDAI HAS LIFTED the lid on its third-generation i30.

To date, about 400,000 second-gen i30 models have been sold in Europe. With this new model, Hyundai is hoping it will rival the Volkswagen Golf.

The five-door, five-seater hatchback will have a choice of engines. There will be a 1.6-litre diesel unit with 95hp, 110hp or 133hp. All options can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission and the two most powerful units can be had with a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Alongside that is a new turbocharged petrol unit, the 1.4 T-GDI with 140hp. The two other petrol options are a 1.4-litre unit with 100hp and a 1.0-litre T-GDi with 120hp.

The new Cascading Grille feature, inspired by the flow of poured molten steel apparently, will become the face for future Hyundai models. Other body styles will be added to the range, and the high-performance i30 N hot hatch will join the Hyundai family later in 2017.

Hyundai makes its own steel for the production of its vehicles and the new i30 chassis has been completely reworked. The quantity of Advanced High Strength Steel has almost doubled to 53%, the car is around 28kg lighter at the body-in-white stage, and rigidity has increased by 22% in comparison to its predecessor. This should all help with both performance and efficiency.

The new Hyundai i30 will be available in early 2017.
