Skoda kills off the Yeti with its new Karoq compact SUV

Skoda’s new SUV breaks cover.

CZECH CAR MAKER Skoda is to launch an all-new model into the crowded compact SUV market to rival the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.

Called the Karoq, it will effectively replace the quirky Yeti model and is to be built on the same platform as the current SEAT Ateca and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Although the Karoq has only been shown in its development camouflage, it is said to bear a close resemblance to the larger Kodiaq model. Compared to the Yeti it replaces, the Karoq is longer and wider, with a stretched wheelbase adding more passenger space inside.

Practicality is set to be one of the new model’s high points, with a 521-litre boot that is capable of increasing to 1,630 litres when required.

There will be a range of four engines to choose from: a 1.0 and 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine, plus 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesel. Buyers will have a choice of automatic and manual gearboxes as well as front or all-wheel drive transmissions.

The Karoq will be the first Skoda model to be available with a fully digital instrument display similar to that used in the Volkswagen Tiguan.

As before with the Kodiaq, the Karoq’s name it is derived from the language of the indigenous people of Alaska’s Kodiak Island. It is a combination of the terms ‘KAA’RAQ’ (car) and ‘RUQ’ (arrow), which is the symbol that constitutes the central element of Skoda’s logo.

Skoda will officially unveil the Karoq on 18 May with prices and specifications expected to be announced after that. It is believed that the Karoq will have a starting price similar to that of the Yeti, which starts at €23,995.
