An Garda Síochána said the acting commissioner stressed the focus should be on carrying out the important work done by the force every day.

ACTING GARDA COMMISSIONER Noirín O’Sullivan met yesterday with senior managers in the force to discuss the recent revelations about taped phonecalls at garda stations and the former commissioner’s departure.

Martin Callinan resigned as commissioner last week before it was revealed that incoming and outgoing calls at garda stations have been taped since the 1980s. An Garda Síochána said yesterday that O’Sullivan, who took over Callinan’s role, met with over 200 senior managers in the organisation “to discuss recent events and hear their views on how to ensure the strong trust An Garda Síochána enjoys from the community is maintained”.

“Commissioner O’Sullivan said that although the organisation was dealing with some major issues, it was critical that there continued to be a strong focus on carrying out the important work done by staff across the organisation every day of the week that improves the lives of people and communities,” it said on its Facebook page yesterday, posting a number of photos of the meeting.

In a further development in the saga, it emerged yesterday that calls between 86 inmates and their solicitors at were also recorded. The Dáil will debate a motion of no confidence in Justice Minister Alan Shatter for the second day later on. Despite strong calls for his resignation over the controversy, the government is supporting the minister.
