Senator David Norris outside Leinster House today Hugh O'Connell

Norris actively seeking nomination for presidency bid

Senator David Norris is officially back in the race.

SENATOR DAVID NORRIS has re-entered the race to become the next President of Ireland.

Speaking outside Leinster House today, Norris offered very little comment but said he will confirm when he has a nomination.

“I am actively interested,” the Senator told journalists.

He would not comment on how much support he has secured already. He would also offer no reason as to why he changed his mind about seeking a nomination.

He had announced that he was withdrawing his bid to become a candidate on 2 August last. The declaration followed a controversy surrounding a letter he wrote pleading clemency for his former partner Ezra Nawi after Nawi was convicted of statutory rape in 1997.

The Trinity scholar was surrounded by members of the ‘We Want Norris’ campaign, which has collected over 10,000 signatures, outside Leinster House this afternoon.

Senator Norris is one of Ryan Tubridy’s guests on the Late Late Show tonight.
