Officers in Jimmy Savile investigation arrest 82-year-old

The suspect has been bailed until a date in May.

POLICE IN LONDON investigating allegations of sexual abuse by the late TV personality Jimmy Savile have made another arrest.

An 82-year-old man was arrested by officers on suspicion of sexual offences. He has been bailed to a date in May, pending further enquiries.

The Berkshire resident was interviewed under caution last November after attending a south London police premises by appointment.

On 24 November 2012, his address in Berkshire was searched. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation examining complaints against people who are not connected to Savile.

A number of arrests have been made by investigators as part of Operation Yewtree, the investigation established following an ITV documentary highlighting accusations of abuse against the BBC presenter.

Since it was set up, police have heard from about 600 possible victims and eleven people have been arrested. Earlier this month, a review of the allegations found mistakes were made by police between 1964 and 2012.

A separate report released in January revealed that Savile abused children in hospitals, a hospice and television studios, unchecked, for decades. The scale of abuse was described as “unprecedented” with at least 214 offences and 34 rapes recorded.

Police said Savile used his celebrity status to “hide in plain sight” while abusing children and adults. Commander Peter Spindler of the Metropolitan Police said Savile’s offending was “vast, predatory and opportunistic”.
