AN OLD WARTIME shell that was found at a property close to a polling station in Wexford town has been made safe.
The device was found in an old shed close to The Faythe National School where polling has been taking place today.
The Irish Defence Forces’ bomb disposal team arrived at the scene earlier this afternoon and declared the area safe at 4.30pm following a routine operation.
Gardaí had cordoned off the area with some traffic diversions in place for a short period.
Local politicians had expressed concern that the diversions may affect turnout but the polling station has remained open throughout the day.
The school where polling has been taking place is the old workplace of Wexford TD Brendan Howlin who taught there for seven years.
