Ireland is the 12th best place in the world in which to grow old

The country receives a high ranking in the category that measures social connections and physical safety, but fares less well for ‘employment and education’.

IRELAND HAS BEEN ranked in twelfth place in a new index of how well ageing populations are faring around the world.

The Global AgeWatch Index, carried out by advocacy group HelpAge International, is based on factors that influence older people’s wellbeing, including  income, health, and employment and education.

Sweden comes out on top in the list, while Afghanistan, at 91st place, is at the bottom of the index of countries surveyed.

Breaking down the figures — Ireland is rated as 24th for income security; 14th for ‘health status’ and third for ‘enabling environment’ which measures areas like social connections, physical safety, civic freedom and access to public transport.

However, the country is 32nd in terms of employment and education for older people.

The UK is one place behind Ireland at 13th, and receives its best rating – at tenth – for income security, and its worst – 24th – for employment and education rank.

Elsewhere on the list — Norway is second, while Germany is third. The US has a ranking of 8th, China is 35th and Russia is at 78th.
