Porsche has restored its oldest 911 (after finding it in a barn)

The oldest 911 vehicle is now in the Porsche Museum.

PORSCHE HAS JUST proudly unveiled its latest and oldest car – a 901.

Yes, it does indeed look like an old 911 but this car is in fact technically a Porsche 901, which is the name that the company originally gave to its replacement for the iconic 356.

The reason it soon changed to the 911 format we now know so well is that Peugeot lodged an objection, claiming that it held the copyright on all car names that used a format consisting of a number-0-number as the name.

This car was first discovered by a film crew on an antiques programme, though at the time it wasn’t known quite how special it was. When Porsche became aware of the car’s existence it soon made moves to snap it up for its own collection.

Since then the car has undergone a complete restoration taking three years and is now proudly on display at the company’s museum in Stuttgart.

It bears chassis number 300057, meaning it was only the 57th example to be built. Unusually for this age of car, when Porsche’s experts began the restoration process they found the car to be in completely original condition.

A high proportion of the parts were restored rather than replaced, and where new items were required Porsche transplanted many from existing vehicles, ensuring that as much of this car is made from period correct parts rather than brand new reproductions.
