One of three Michaela accused cites 'police brutality' in court

Two men named on murder charge and one on conspiracy in tragic honeymoon killing.

ONE OF THE murder accused in the Michaela McAreavy case has claimed he was the victim of police brutality yesterday.

Abinash Treeboowoon, 29, claimed in court this morning that he had been roughly treated by Mauritian police during questioning over the death of Michaela. News Now Mauritius said his legal counsel has asked that an inquiry be made into the allegations.

Treeboowoon, a room attendant from Plaine des Roches, and Sandip Monea, 41, a floor supervisor from Petit Raffray are charged with the murder of Michaela McAreavy, nee Harte, who was found dead in her room by her new husband John McAreavy on Monday afternoon.

She had left the restaurant where she and John had been having lunch to go to the room to get a packet of bicsuits to eat with their tea. When she took a long time to return, Mr McAreavy went to the room to check up on her and found her body.

Police also named a third man, room attendant Raj Theekov, 33, saying he is being held on a conspiracy charge. All three worked in Legends Hotel where the honeymooning McAreaveys checked in last Saturday for a week-long stay.

The three will appear in court again next Wednesday, January 19.
