Former Green TD (turned musician) Paul Gogarty gains council seat

The two-term Green deputy has long-since left the party fold after his membership lapsed.

THE FORMER GREEN Party TD Paul Gogarty is back in politics as of this morning.

He’s claimed seat on South Dublin County Council for the Lucan area.

The two-term Green TD has long-since left the party fold after his membership lapsed.

In the years since departing Leinster House amid the Greens wipe-out in the 2011 General Election, Gogarty’s pursued a career as a musician under the name ‘His Sweet Surprise’ .

His efforts included this not-so-subtle anti-drugs track, ‘Molly is a Liar’…

Gogarty (of course) gained international attention when this clip of his “most unparliamentary language” from 2009 went viral, and was picked up by news sites all over the world…

Speaking to TheJournal.ie earlier this year, Gogarty said he had considered running again as a Green candidate and discussed it with a number of members, including former leader John Gormley but ultimately decided to go it alone.

I discussed it with friends and family and it was a bit of debate, I don’t want to say that that was the primary reason for my choice but when we weighed it up it came to about 85 per cent that that was the way to go.

He added that, having been involved in his local Palmerstown community for 27 years, “I never got votes for being Green.”
