Emergency penalty points legislation to be published TOMORROW

A technical issue could see thousands of points quashed.

EMERGENCY LEGISLATION TO deal with a loophole in the penalty points system will be published tomorrow, Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe has said.

The legislation will be progressed through the Oireachtas next week.

Donohoe flagged the possibility of emergency legislation being required earlier this week.

The minister sought the advice of the Attorney General Maire Whelan to deal with what he described as “a technical issue which gave rise to potential difficulty with penalty points”.

The suspected loophole, the exact details of which have not been made public, could see thousands of penalty points for various driving offences quashed.

Emergency legislation may be needed to close penalty points loophole
