Why is this the case, why have people like Magee, O’Callaghan, Brady and many others who colluded with the perpetrators in covering up their crimes not been prosecuted, Brady took an active part in silencing two young people who were abused by the worst offender Smyth or then went on to commit even more crimes against children, Magee and O’Callaghan by their actions allowed known predator priests to continue to offend knowing full well what they were doing, surely that makes them accessories to the crimes? How many of the people who were in charge of the various Magdalene laundries have been charged? How many doctors or politicians who fed these places with inmates have been charged. Why have the senior Gardai in charge and the individual gardai who FAILED to their jobs and investigate child abuse not been suspended, pensions frozen or put on hold pending investigation into their neglect of duty? This is Ireland’s version of the concentration camps albeit on a far lesser scale and with less actual killing, but how do you measure what happened in these institutions, how do measure the damage to the victims and as for the Irish people, the collective ‘we didn’t know about it’ mentality is not good enough, it is the reminiscent as the the Germans who all denied they knew what was happening to the jews, maybe the Irish population should have been made to confront the horrors or ‘bury the dead’ so that they would have then demanded that the people who actually did the wrongs are punished. But, this is Ireland, land of no accountability and where responsibility is a dirty word and in the case of the catholic church in particular the idea that they did anything wrong in how they handled things is brilliant example of self delusion on a massive scale. The successive Irish governments, the civil servants and the politicians responsible for allowing this to happen including past Taoisigh should also have their actions or lack of actions on this national shame brought into focus because they too have failed in their duty, the most basic of them all, the protection of the most vulnerable citizens, our children. We must never again trust an organisation like the catholic church to run our schools, institutions or hospitals and we must make sure that all government departments with responsibility for running social services, education and health are run by people who are accountable under law to ensure that this does never happen again. The people in charge MUST be made to understand that if it does it is they who will stand in the dock alongside the perpetrators and that it will go all the way to the minister in charge and the taoiseach of the day. ACCOUNTABILITY end of!

IN Plain Sight report reminds us that Irish children were subjected to “treatment that would be horrifying if it were done to prisoners of war, never mind little boys and girls”, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald said yesterday. “Rape, burning, beating, biting. Horrendous, awful torture.” –

From the Child Abuse Commission Third Interim Report:

Witnesses described a daily existence that involved the possibility of being hit by any staff member at any time for any reason.Random and continous abuse towards themselves or others created an environment of pervasive fear.The stated reasons for physical abuse included inattention at lessons, not knowing the answer to a question, left handedness, absconding, not obeying instructions quickly enough,bedwetting,general wear and tear on clothing and footwear,talking at meals or in bed, playing soccer, not being able to carry out work tasks, particularly farm work quickly and properly.

Beatings were administered to boys to every part of their body, the front and back of hands, wrists, legs, back, buttocks, head, face, and feet. Some beatings were done in public and witnesses reported that they were sometimes made to remove all their clothing for these beatings. A variety of instruments used to enforce discipline were described to the committee. The Leather strap was the most commonly reported instrument. Also reported were a variety of sticks and other instruments including ashplants, blackthorn sticks, brush handles, pointers, farm implements, drain rods, rubber tyres, fan belts, horse tackle, sliotars(a very hard ball) and hurleys.

Witnesses described becoming accustomed to being hit as staff passed by, or in the classroom, as their daily lot and believed that life everywhere was like that. Witnesses reported that they were hit on all areas of the body, the fingers, hands, wrists, shoulders, ears, face, head, trunk, feet, legs, and thighs. Among the instruments witnesses described as having been used were canes, sticks, pointers, chair legs, sewing machine treadle belts, leather straps, rulers, scissors, keys, rosary beads, coat hangers, hand brushes, hairbrushes, yard brushes, rungs of chairs, broom handles and tree branches. Other forms of punishment and physical deprivation (of girls) described included: being locked in dark rooms or coal sheds, kneeling on stone floors in corridors and steps for long periods, standing in cold dark corridors for hours or all night, being put outside all night on fire escapes, locked in the the pig sty, being placed in a cold bath as a remedy for bed wetting.

There were reports of food or sleep deprivation and of being force fed.

Witnesses reported that they were told they were only there because no one in their family cared about them. The other main aspects of emotional abuse complained of were personal denigration, family denigration, public humiliation, being subjected without explanation to fearful situations, and having irrational fears instilled in them by a strong negative emphasis on religion. Public humilation, personal ridicule and denigration of an individuals family. Witnesses described being constantly told they were unwanted and worthless. Namecalling of a derogatory nature was reported as commonplace.

The most common forms of neglect complained of included: Lack of adequate and edible food, poor clothing in terms of appearance or suitability for the seasons and materials used, institutions being inadequately heated, poor hygiene practices, and poor bedding particularly in relation to children who wet the bed.

The witnesses testimony to the Child Abuse Commission is of abuse on a hiterto unimagined scale. Of beatings,of humiliations,of sexual abuse of all kinds, of degradation and of how, in most cases when they reported abuse their claims were dismissed. In over a quarter of cases they were subjected to punishment for making the reports. But what is even more startling is that the abusers were not just members of the religious orders who ran the industrial and reformatory schools,but lay care workers, nightwatchmen, teachers, visiting professionals, farm workers, Catholic foster parents and Catholic godparents and a further dimension of this scandal is the culpability of the judiciary in consigning so many children to such institutions on essentially trivial justifications.

I do not understand how Irish people can express extreme abhorrence at these levels of abuse and still tolerate the level of involvement of the roman church in their lives. Christenings, marriages, funerals, etc. all carry along apace to the rites of the roman church. People will express outrage at abuse and still attend church ceremonies to worship and pray. The influence of this church seems to be based at a deep level of cultural instinctiveness so hardwired and rooted into the psyche that it leaves some people at a loss as to how to resolve these issues with current position of clergy in our society. Power and position equal respectability in the minds of many and the patronizing and meaningless apologies and comments made by currently serving priests and bishops is nauseating. The ‘a la carte’ catholic is still a catholic and while not showing up in church every sunday still make up the numbers. The roman collar is now as much a symbol of repression as the jackboot but is still very much at the heart of irish cultural tradition.

the director of public prosecution does not explain his decisions. the gardai compile and supply the files (which from time to time became conveniently lost) which inform his decision. there is an element within this states administration which will at all costs defend and uphold the established order and quite a few within the general population who subscribe to this with their voting choices and the manner of religious observance.

The leadership of the Roman Catholic Church should be leading the parade in accountability, transparency and justice as far as the issue of childhood sexual abuse is concerned but the bishops are not only not leading the parade they are hardly even bringing up the rear.

In the United States individual state Catholic Conferences have been accepting financial support from other religious denominations to augment their already well funded opposition to criminal and civil statue of limitation reform. The number of state Catholic Conference lobbyists marshaled against reform is unparalleled.

One of the biggest problems is the lack of dialog between bishops and individuals and groups of good Catholics who love their Church and expected it to do better. Two articles in the National Catholic Reporter (U.S.) state the case:

The intense scrutiny the monstrous crimes of Roman Catholic Clergy are receiving by the media, publicly subjecting them to the same humiliation, shame, reproach, and degradation in the eyes of the worldwide community which they themselves imposed upon their innumerable powerless and vulnerable victims whom they callously and mercilessly sexually raped and molested, in what they themselves reckon to be the “Worst Crime”, exacts a kind of POETIC JUSTICE if nothing else. The protection and welfare of children SHOULD BE the concern of everyone in society, and is embraced in what Christ said was the 2nd greatest commandment, namely, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Matt. 22:39b)

It seems implausible to me that otherwise intelligent people are willing to ignore the abundant and compelling evidence regarding the abuse of children across the globe by the Roman Catholic “church” that unarguably and categorically proves the “church” of which they are members is not guided by the Holy Spirit, neither the “one true church” built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, of which Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone and only head.(Eph. 2:20; Eph. 5:23)

So blinded are they by their inbred institutional loyalty they find themselves unable to act rationally in the face of the painful realities with which they are now confronted which compels them to leave, but choose instead to remain tethered to a church that is utterly devoid of any moral or spiritual credibility. “For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth.”(Eph. 5:9) In place of goodness, there is gross immorality and unchecked vice . . all that is evil; in place of righteousness, there is widespread corruption; in place of truth, there is mental reservation . . deceit and lies. As it is written . . “spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Eph. 6:12)

May the Lord yet be pleased to grant those who are so blinded, the courage to renounce the counterfeit religion of Rome, that they may by God’s grace, wholeheartedly embrace the religion of Christ and serve HIM in sincerity and in truth.
