Poll: Should the government take a position on same-sex marriage?

There may be a referendum next year – but will the Government support it?

ACCORDING TO THE Sunday Times, the Taoiseach is considering staying neutral in a referendum on same-sex marriage.

Journalist Sarah McInernery says the possibility of not recommending a ‘Yes’ vote is being examined by Enda Kenny in an attempt to avoid any more defections from Fine Gael TDs.

It is understood the Attorney General will be asked if the government can hold a number of votes on ‘Constitution Day’ without taking a formal position on a number of issues. If permission is granted, the referendums will be presented to the public as having been recommended by the Constitutional Convention, and not the government itself.

Therefore, TDs could oppose same-sex marriage without being subject to party disciplinary measures.

So, today we ask: Should the government take a position on same-sex marriage?

Poll Results:

It should stay neutral (2049)
It should support a Yes vote (1543)
I'm not sure (563)
