Poll: Should welfare payments be cut?

Expenditure in the Department of Social Protection has to be cut – but the Government says the axe won’t be applied to social welfare rates themselves…

THE GOVERNMENT HAS said that it will have to cut expenditure in the Department of Social Protection (it was allocated €14.2bn in last year’s Budget).

However, while Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore will not outline where the savings will come from, a Government spokesperson has told TheJournal.ie this morning that social welfare payment rates themselves will not be cut.

What do you think? Cutbacks will have to be made in the department somewhere – should cuts be applied to social welfare payments?

Poll Results:

There should be cuts made to some social welfare payments. (1115)
No, there should not be any cuts to social welfare payments - find savings elsewhere in the department. (741)
Yes, cuts should be applied to all social welfare payments. (671)
There should be no cut at all the budget of the Department of Social Protection. (255)
I don't know. (63)
