This Porsche 911 SC Targa is the ultimate driver's car - and a beauty to boot

The Porsche 911 SC Targa could be a sound investment.

IF I HAD the money I’d buy…

I’d buy a Porsche, but not just any Porsche. It would be a classic, iconic model with a seriously stylish shape, punchy performance and excellent engagement. Oh, and I’d get one with a super cool retractable roof. I’d buy a 911 Targa.

Why a Porsche 911 SC Targa?

Porsche 911s are real drivers’ cars. They are so engaging and responsive out on the road. Once you put the foot down you never want to let it up. 911s are gorgeous to look at too. They have a classic and iconic shape that seems to get better and better as the years go by.

There is only one way to improve on a 911 – and that is to take the roof off and feel the wind in your hair as you blast along. This Targa allows you to do just that as well as providing extra safety with that style-defining roll-bar.

What’s special about this particular one?

This particular 1981 911 is the SC (Super Carrera) Targa model. A targa top is a semi-convertible car body style with a removable soft roof section, a roll-bar behind the seats and a rear window made of safety glass. It is finished in this brilliant Grand Prix White paint job with contrasting anodised black trim on the windows and black handles and bumper and roll-bar. The interior is also in a contrasting grey and black scheme.

It has been lovingly and carefully restored and looks wonderful. It has been well cared for, you can tell. It is powered by a really smooth, sweet-revving 204hp 3.0-litre air-cooled flat engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. It comes with just 70,918 miles on the clock and a full service history.

It costs just €55 to tax and year and qualifies for classic car insurance.

Snap this up now as the 911 SC is having a bit of a revival and they appear to be the last of the affordable air-cooleds. This is one classic that could turn into a nice little investment.

What does it look like in action?

It looks stunning and sounds amazing. Here’s one very happy owner taking us for a ride along in his 1981 911 SC.

Who else drives one?

Celebrities and car enthusiasts the world over have fallen in love with the 911′s charms and good looks. Jerry Seinfeld has one of the biggest Porsche collections in the world but he sold off 15 of his Porsches in 2016 and he still has loads left. He has the first 911 ever produced and the last air-cooled 911 ever produced.

In 1982 Martina Navratilova won a Porsche 911 SC Targa when she won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix against Tracy Austin.

It costs €40,000. What else could you get for the money?

If you have your heart set on a convertible for the same money, you could have this BMW 4 Series.
