Americans were all set for powdered alcohol...but now look to be in for a wait

The US government said the labelling approvals were issued in error.

POWDERED ALCOHOL MAY take some time to hit the US after regulators found a labelling problem.

The product which is made by Arizona company Lipsmark will come in six varieties.

Lipsmark originally stated that it was on track for release in the US in the fall but it has since reported that it learned of a “discrepancy” from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

The company stated “We were contacted yesterday about the discrepancy” but continued that ”Palcohol was approved and is still approved”.

Lipsmark said there was “a mutual agreement for us to surrender the labels,” and that new labels would be submitted.

Any approval date for those is unknown.

Robert Lehrman, the principal attorney at Lehrman Beverage Law in the US,  was speaking on The Last Word this evening.

He said the labels got approved after a thorough review on 8 April but that yesterday the approvals were rescinded. “The company surrendered the labels.”

He said,

The government did say the approvals were issued in error.

“It’s entirely possible that the government just wants some small adjustments. It’s also possible that it would take a really long time before the approvals are ever reissued”.

Controversial

The powder can be mixed with water to create an alcoholic beverage.

A statement on the company website last week stated:

What’s worse than going to a concert, sporting event etc. and having to pay $10, $15, $20 for a mixed drink with tax and tip?

“Are you kidding me?! Take Palcohol into the venue and enjoy a mixed drink for a fraction of the cost.”

That statement has since been taken down.

The company also said the product will be sold to people of legal drinking age and could even be sprinkled on food.

Powdered alcohol has already been approved in Japan and some European countries.
