Thieves warned that stealing the ESB's overhead wires is 'very dangerous'

Gardaí and ESB Networks issued a joint statement on the issue this afternoon.

ESB NETWORKS HAS expressed its concern at the number of recent thefts of overhead wires between poles on its live network.

The firm, along with gardaí today, issued a statement to warn perpetrators that it is a “very dangerous activity with potentially fatal consequences”.

They urged the criminals to cease their activities immediately.

“Interference with the power network creates a risk for the public and causes inconvenience to customers by interrupting their electricity supply,” gardaí said in the statement.

Detectives added that the public has an important role to play in helping to put a stop to this type of theft.

“It is vital that if you see any suspicious people or vehicles anywhere near power lines that you contact An Garda Síochána/ESB Networks as a matter of urgency,” they concluded.
