Prisoner found dead in Midlands Prison cell

It’s the second death of a prisoner in 24 hours.

A PRISONER WAS found dead in his cell in the Midlands Prison this morning.

The Irish Prison Service says the man was discovered unresponsive in his cell at about 6.30am this morning and was given medical attention by prison staff.

An ambulance was called an the man was transferred to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí have been informed and an investigation has begun. The family of the man has also been informed.

The death is the second death of a prisoner in custody in 24 hours.

Yesterday morning, Douglas Ward was found dead in his prison cell in Dublin’s Mountjoy Prison after a suspected drug overdose.

Ward, 38, had been serving a 16 year sentence for the manslaughter of 18-year-old Niall Dorr.

The Irish Prison Service says investigations into both deaths will be carried out by the Inspector of Prisons.
