THREE PEOPLE WERE taken to hospital earlier today after a prison van crashed on the M6 motorway in Co Galway.

The vehicle with two cells was on its way to Galway District Court from Dublin with just one female prisoner inside.

Two members of staff, male and female, along with the prisoner were all taken to Galway University Hospital for injuries which have been described as “non life-threatening”.

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service told TheJournal.ie that the van “appeared to have had a blowout and it overturned”.

The accident happened on the road between Loughrea and Athenry, between Junction 16 and 17.
