Fancy a cruise but don't like boats? Five-star train travel is coming to Ireland

The company behind the Orient Express will be launching here from next August. They’re creating 50 jobs while they’re at it…

IRISH TRAIN TRAVEL can be fairly mundane – the longest journeys take hardly more than three hours, and you don’t tend to get much more excitement than drunken Irish people occupying seats they haven’t reserved.

Our train network is about to get a shot in the arm though, as the company behind the world-famous Orient Express is set to bring luxury train travel to these shores from late next year.

Belmond Limited, the company in question, operates hotel, train and river cruises across the globe.

Oirish 5 Belmond Belmond

The Belmond Grand Hibernian (as the train will be known) stems from the success the company has seen with similar train cruises in Scotland.

The train will consist of 11 Irish Rail carriages retrofitted to five-star standards, containing 20 luxury cabins. Maximum passenger capacity will be 40 people for each journey.

Oirish 6 Belmond Belmond

Irish Rail staff will run the train, while the new service should create 50 jobs.

Three different cruise options are on the table for two, four and six nights. The shortest sees the train visit Belfast from Dublin, while the four nighter travels from Dublin to Cork, Killarney and Galway. The six night option is a combination of the two .

As you might expect prices aren’t exactly cheap – ranging from €3,160 for the shortest trip, to €7,000 for the six-night tour.

Oirish 1 Belmond Belmond

But then the demographic expected to take advantage of the routes is mostly North American, a region where Belmond plans to spend an additional €900,000 on marketing on top of the €9.3 million it cost to refit the existing carriages.

It may be expensive, but if the Irish train’s promotional video is anything to go by, the food is top notch.

Happy eatin Is it just us, or does this man look very, very like Richard Bruton?

The service should launch by August 2016.

    @waffler
Speak for yourself. If I see an article about a missing I child I will always read it. And so will every other decent human being. Keep up the good work The Journal.

@waffler I don’t have kids and maybe the journal do report them all but what if it was your child.. Would you not want every angle covered?

if the journal keeps reporting every time a kid has a row with their parents people will stop reading these articles and the genuinely serious cases will be ignored. ever heard of the boy who cried wolf?

Every single child is important regardless of reasons why they are missing, and if your the sort of person that will lose interest because there may be a bit more than you can be bothered to read then I think you need to change your way of thinking. Who knows what could happen to a child even If they do run once they are out there on their own. God where has all the decent people gone in this country. It’s all come about money greed and jealousy.

I agree on the vital importance of publicising any missing child (or missing person, for that matter), and I commend this publication for doing so. However, it is necessary to give closure to stories that have closure; particularly where it is a positive outcome. It must be reported where the person was found, what condition they were in, and what the circumstances of their apparent disappearance was. To simply state that the child was found is neither acceptable nor balanced coverage.

Journal staff need to work on writing skills… everyday there is an example of bad journalistic skills. As a reader, I want to know what happened to the kid while he was missing and etc
