Protests over abortion bill ongoing on Kildare street

Pro-choice and pro-life protesters are continuing to demonstrate outside the gates of Leinster House this evening.

CROWDS THAT GATHERED earlier today outside Leinster House ahead of the vote on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013 are continuing to voice their views this evening.

Some 300 people attended a pro-life vigil outside the gates of Leinster House last night, and demonstrators advocating both pro-choice and pro-life views gathered on Kildare Street this morning as Deputies prepared to vote again on the contentious Bill.

It’s expected Fine Gael will lose the support of one of its highest-profile members if European Affairs Minister Lucinda Creighton follows through with threats to vote against the legislationwhen a number of amendments are called.

As of 6.30pm, there were a larger number of pro-choice protesters at the demonstration, who were heard to shout “you don’t care if women die”, at protesters on the other side.
