Two sailors rescued from their fast-sinking yacht off Wicklow coast

With help from a much larger vessel, volunteers managed to save the yacht as well, though it was almost below the surface when they took the two sailors from it.

ARKLOW RNLI VOLUNTEERS rescued two sailors from a sinking yacht yesterday afternoon.

The RNLI crew were alerted to the incident at 2.43pm yesterday. They first tried to use pumps to get the water out of the boat but this proved unsuccessful and the vessel’s crew of two were evacuated to the lifeboat.

At this stage, the yacht was almost beneath the surface but a Commissioners of Irish Lights vessel joined the rescue and volunteers managed to save it by securing it to this boat and using additional pumps. The lifeboat then towed it back to shore.

Commenting on the save, Arklow RNLI press officer Mark Corcoran said today: “The professionalism shown by Arklow RNLI’s volunteers, Commissioners of Irish Lights crewmembers and our Coastguard colleagues overhead, not only helped save two lives today, the dedication and bravery by all involved also helped us to save the sinking vessel and return her safely to Arklow, this shows how all of our training and exercising with the other agencies on our coast pays off”.
