Father in his 60s out walking with daughter dies after being struck by car in west Dublin

The incident occurred around 9pm on Newcastle Road near Lucan last night.

Updated 10.15am

A MAN IN his 60s was killed after he was struck by a 4×4 in west Dublin yesterday evening.

His daughter – aged 17 – was also injured in the collision, which occurred on the Newcastle Road, between Lucan and Newcastle, shortly before 9pm.

The pair were walking in the vicinity of the 12th Lock bridge when they were struck by the car.

The man was treated at the scene but later pronounced dead, while the woman is receiving treatment in hospital. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The driver of the car is also being treated in hospital.

The road was closed following the crash, with diversions put in place.

Two units of the Dublin Fire Brigade and an ambulance attended the scene.

Local councillor Paul Gogarty told TheJournal.ie that it was a “terrible incident” and an “awful tragedy”.

“I send my condolensces out to the family”, he said.

He added that the road narrows near the canal point at the 12th Lock Bridge, the area is not particularly well lit at night and that there was no real safe walking area for pedestrians.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them at Clondalkin Garda Station at 01-666 7600, or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.

Already this week, a woman in her 60s died in a road traffic accident in Kilkenny, while two women in their 70s died after being struck by a vehicle in Louth.
