Elderly man killed in morning crash in Cork

This is the 103rd road death in Ireland this year.

A MAN IN his 70s died today after the car he was driving hit a ditch near Macroom, Co Cork this morning.

Gardaí are investigating the single vehicle collision, which took place at Knockyrourke, in Stuake at around 8.45 am.

The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed to Cork University Hospital.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators closed the road for some time today, to allow them to examine the scene, but it has since been reopened.

Witnesses to the incident are being asked to call Macroom Garda Station on 026-20590, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666-111, or to contact any Garda station.

Today’s incident brings to 103 the number of people killed on the roads in Ireland so far in 2014.

This constitutes an increase of five from this time last year.
