Two men arrested after robberies at bookies in Athlone and Castlebar

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED a 38-year-old man following a robbery at a bookmakers shop in Baylough, Athlone.

A lone male armed with a knife entered the shop and threatened staff at approximately 3.40pm yesterday.

He took an amount of cash and fled the scene in a car. No one was injured during the incident.

During a follow-up operation involving local garda and traffic units a man was arrested a short time later. A car and a quantity of cash were recovered.

The man is currently being detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act at Athlone Garda Station.

Mayo

Meanwhile, gardaí have also arrested a 28-year-old man following a robbery at a bookmakers shop in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

A lone male threatened a staff member in a bookies on Castle Street at approximately 9.10pm yesterday before leaving the scene on foot with a sum of cash. No one was injured during the incident.

A man was arrested nearby a short time later and a sum of cash was recovered.

The man is currently being detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act at Castlebar Garda Station.

Gardaí said investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
